Pasta in 10 minutes

Updated: Sep 6, 2020

Cooking pasta? Luckily cooking pasta is not rocket science and is really simple. Timing is very crucial. Your packet pasta will cook in about 10 minutes. To cook it for less time and you might find it chalky and hard. To cook it for longer will certainly turn it to a soft chewy mush. This will also depened on which pasta shape you are cooking!

Again it is a matter of choice as to how you enjoy your pasta. The key is to check it and stop cooking when it is soft enough to chew but not hard and crunchy. At 8 minutes have a quick taste. If it’s ready take the pasta off the heat straight away, if not give it another minute then test again. At 10 minutes take a bite. If longer, test every minute. You will soon workout the best time for your taste.

The majority of time you will be boiling the pasta. But of course you may be baking the pasta. Times will vary. General rule you will add 1ltr water per 100g of pasta to the pot.

You can season pasta as you go. The easiest and simplest is

  • Add a teaspoon of salt in the water to boil

  • A pasta sauce, and olive oil over the cooked, drained pasta

  • Finely grated cheese like parmesan or pecorino

  • Pepper or chilli, if you prefer.

Simple Pasta Recipe:

Boil the water add salt and/or olive oil in a large pot. Once the water is boiling add the pasta and cook for 8-12 mins, depending on the shape. Test at 8 minutes. If ready drain and leave to steam dry for a few mins, just until the pasta looks dry. Then add pasta sauce, pesto or simply a good drizzle of olive oil and seasoning. Mix really well to coat and allow some of the sauce or dressing to be absorbed into the pasta. Season with salt, pepper and a finely grated cheese. Tomatoes are always a tasty extra to add.
